5 Common Jump Rope Mistakes To Avoid

The jump rope is one of the oldest and most effective fitness equipment available today, but it’s also misunderstood. If you’re new to jumping, it can seem difficult and daunting to know exactly how to get started and what you should be doing while you’re jumping, which makes avoiding these common mistakes even more important. Luckily, learning how to jump rope will be as easy once you learn how to avoid these common mistakes!

1) Improper grip

One common mistake made with jump ropes is gripping the rope too tightly. This can make your hands hurt, wear down your wrists and even lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Remember, while skipping ropes for boxing, to grip the handles of the rope like you’re shaking someone’s hand.

2) Not paying attention

The first mistake many people make when skipping rope is not paying attention. The rope jumping, swinging and twirling can be mesmerizing, and it is easy to lose track of what you are doing. Make sure you know where the rope is at all times so that you don’t end up hitting yourself or anyone else with it.

3) Sloppy footwork

Sloppy footwork is the most common mistake in jump roping. It’s easy for beginners to lose their balance and put all their weight on one foot. There are a few tips to help you keep your feet under your body:

  • Do not cross your feet
  • Stand straight up

Skipping too many practices can lead you back down that long road of relearning how to jump rope again. So skip as few as possible!

Not making enough jumps: Another common mistake is not taking enough jumps at one time. When you do this, your feet will constantly be stopping and starting, which tires them out quickly and leads to strain on other muscles. Make sure to take enough jumps to land close together but not so close that one foot lands on top of the other’s toes or heels.
