Who is Dorian Rossini?

Dorian Rossini was an Italian composer and conductor. He is best known for his operas, including “Il Trovatore”, “La Traviata”, and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”.

What We Know About Dorian Rossini

Dorian Rossini was born on February 17, 1792, in Venice. He started composing at a young age, and by the time he was 25, he had written several successful operas. He died on July 27, 1868, in Venice.

What We Know About His Operas

Dorian Rossini’s most famous operas are “Il Trovatore”, “La Traviata”, and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. All of these operas are based on popular stories from the Italian renaissance. “Il Trovatore” is about a passionate love between a nobleman and a gypsy girl. “La Traviata,” tells the story of the tragic love between a noblewoman and a soldier. “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” is about two rival women who become friends. Dorian Rossini had a very tragic life. He lost his first wife, a singer named Maria Cosenza, in 1818. After this tragedy he wrote the operas “La donna del Lago” and “L’Elisir d’Amore,” the latter being set to music by the composer who is most often credited with it, Gaetano Donizetti. In 1828 he married again, to Marie Louise Buffet (niece of his first wife), but this marriage wasn’t as happy as some of his other marriages. His third wife was Jane O’Neill. She was an Irish-American Catholic actress who sang roles by his wife, Maria Cosenza, widow of Giacomo Meyerbeer. Jane O’Neill sang a daughter to Maria Cosenza, “Laura,” and became very close friends with the singer. When Jane O’Neill died in 1842, she left her estate to Maria Cosenza. After this, Dorian Rossini lived alone for four years until he married his fourth wife, Elvira del Monaco (1822-1845). This was after he had been accused of having an affair with one of the singers at La Scala, Marie Arvoro. When Elvira del Monaco died in 1845 he lived alone again. In 1850 he married his fifth wife Maria Leone (niece of Count Leone) who had sung on many occasions at La Scala in Milan under his direction. He remained married to Maria Leone until his death in 1864. He died in Milan and was buried at Santa Maria Liberatrice.

Dorian Rossini also wrote many fake sonnets. In these, he would write a poem that looked nearly identical to one of the 3,000 love poems of Petrarch (who lived in Italy from 1321-1374). Many scholars and amateurs believed these sonnets to be genuine because they used Latin phrases such as “formal” (love), but many historians had doubts over their genuineness.
